When putrchasing solid fuel from a supplier it is essential to ensure they are an approved coal merchant. If they are not a member of the scheme, there are no standards or codes which they must abide by and operate to. As a result there are no assurances in the products and advice you are receiving from them.
As a member of the scheme, we abide by the Coal Trade Code and are committed to serving in the best interest of our customers. The code is based upon eight principles and ensures a basis for honest and fair trading.
The principles are as follows:
- Supply good quality Coal and Smokeless Fuel correctly described.
- Ensure that packed fuels are marked with the maximum information.
- Ensure that staff have a basic knowledge of the Retail Coal Trade.
- Supply suitable fuels for particular appliances.
- Investigate all consumer complaints promptly.
- Display a detailed up-to-date price list.
- trade in a manner compatiable with the good repute of the Retail Coal Trade.
- Make customers aware of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning from the burning fossil fuels and how they can obtain informatgion to protect themselves.
The Approved Coal Merchant Scheme is set up to act in the best interests of the customers. It protects customers against unethical practices and ensures consumers are getting quality products and advice. Founded in 1962 by the Coal Board, it was a partnership between wholesalers and retailers within tjhe solid fuel industry. Today, the Solid Fuel Association funds the scheme which itself is funded by the major producers and distributors in the industry.
To become an Approved Coal Merchant, you must go before an Area panel formed by representatives from the Solid Fuel Association and demonstrate sufficient knowledge of appliances, fuels and consumer laws. It is a lengthy process requiring research, revision and experience. As a member of the scheme, you can purchase in full confidence every time you use Day Brothers products. About Our Company
We are a family coal merchant based in Colney Heath near St Albans.
Day Brothers was originally formed in 1933 by Les and Ron Day. In the late 60’s, Barry and Colin (Les’ sons) joined and Barry continues to run the business together with his wife Sandra, son Ross and daughter Becky, along with drivers Richard, Dave and Chris – supplying top quality coal,smokeless fuels and logs to the Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Essex and London area. They are now firmly established as Hertfordshires leading Coal Merchants.
Although the business has been in existence for over 70 years, it remains true to its origins as a small family friendly reliable business providing a traditional personal delivery service into your home. For smaller quantities, a cash and carry service is available on all products from our depot.

6: TERMS OF SALE
Once you have placed an order with us, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your order where we will ask you to verify that all details of the order are correct. You should notify us immediately of any amendments you wish to make. Once we have verified the price and availability of the goods, you will receive an email confirming acceptance of your order, and confirmation that a contract has been made between us.
Whilst all items are offered for sale in good faith, occasionally, for reasons beyond our control, we may not be able to fulfill your order. Therefore a sale agreement will only exist between yourself and http://www.daybros.co.uk when you receive an email confirming your order has been dispatched. If for any reason your item is unavailable, we will contact you to offer you a substitute, or refund your payment.
Delivery and dispatch times may vary from time to time depending on the availability of products, but we aim to dispatch goods within two working days of acceptance of your order.
We can accept no responsibility for delays in delivery caused by postal delays and major striking action by postal services.
7: REFUNDS & CANCELLATION (INCORRECT/ FAULTY/ DAMAGED ITEMS)
You may cancel your order anytime during the online ordering process before you have confirmed payment details. Once you have confirmed your order, you can then cancel your contract at any time up to 7 working days beginning the day after receipt of your goods. To do this, please contact us immediately in writing, either by email or post.
There is no obligation for you to give any reason for cancellation, however, we do always welcome constructive feedback, so a brief explanation will help us to improve the service we offer to you and other customers in the future.
If you have received the goods and then decide to cancel, the goods must be returned to us at your own expense. The goods must be packaged adequately to protect against damage and return in its original condition for a refund within fourteen (14) days from delivery. Please obtain a Proof of Postage in order to provide proof that you have returned the goods in the unlikely event that we do not receive the returned package.
If you require a refund we will refund the price paid for the goods including the standard delivery charge (if one was charged at checkout) within fourteen (14) days of receiving your returned goods, provided that the the goods arrive at our PO BOX address (see contact page) within 14 days of delivery to you or your notify us of cancellation.
Refunds will only be made against the original credit/ debit card used.
If you have requested an exchange or replacement with the Customer Services Team, this will be proceeded within seven (7) working days of receiving your returned goods and delivered by standard delivery.
We will be happy to exchange or offer a refund on any goods that are received as damaged or faulty in any way, or not what you ordered. Please notify Day Brothers immediately by calling the Customer Services Team on 01727 822710 (Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm, excluding Bank Holidays).

Delivery & Returns
1: We offer a free delivery service for orders of a minimum quantity of 150Kg.
2: Delivery of orders generally take 6 to 7 days from the time we receive your order. This may differ during busy periods.
3: A member of staff will contact you the afternoon before delivery date to confirm eta of delivery
4: Our Delivery Driver will deliver to your required location, IE Coal shed, Coal Bunker, Garden etc.
Day Bros Free Delivery covers Hertfordshire, Essex, North London and parts of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
